The Crystal Bell, part V
Cautiously, quietly, Etain searched every part of the cathedral for signs of the masked stranger. The place seemed to go on and on, turning and winding for an eternity. In one or two rooms, she found signs of life: a half-eaten piece of bread here, a pile of opened, dog-eared books there, the smoldering remains of a few trial spells tucked about. She found further mysteries still: there was an underground level in this cathedral, the first part of which contained the usual larder and wine cellar, but the latter part of which had been closed up. Etain had rather recently become the sort of girl that didn’t let these obstacles bar her way

Etain couldn’t shut her eyes that night for thinking about the tale she had been told. The little shed she had been stationed in lacked a roof, so she stared up at the stars instead and thought and thought until a sharp breeze ran through the air, carrying with it the scent of dew on a summer morning, yet sweeter. She couldn’t quite place it, but it didn’t belong here-- it was getting close to harvest time in the city. She stirred from her bed and looked over the wall of the room. It was a beautiful view. Many months’ journey brought Etain to a city in a valley clearing. The place was actually quite developed (much more so than her own quaint village in the mountains): it was full of myriad little shops and cafés bustling with people, houses stacked and connected with one another, and children running to and fro between Punch and Judy shows, toy shoppes, and fairs. This place seemed so full of life, but at the same time, there was something hidden about this town, like that family secret that no one brings up at dinner parties. She had the sneaking feeling that she would need to stay and investigate the matter; perhaps it would reve

Time passed at a different rate in Etain’s quiet mountain home after that night. Tanel was probably the only person in the whole wide world who could give her the help she needed; she needed to expand her world again. The loss of her father had left emptiness in her heart, but if she could let some more of the world in... it could help her fill that hole. And that is exactly what Tanel did.
The first step was cleaning up the house. Carpets, out! Creatures, out! Knick-knacks and bric-a-brac, out! And underneath the mess made out of fresh pain, Tanel unearthed an old memory: the psaltry. It was worn and covered with dust, but Tanel kne
Of all the things that I could say,
"Lyublyu ya vas," "Jag älskar dig,"
"Ti amo, mio caro," "Je t'aime, Je t'aime!"
To me, they all sound just the same.
Spanish or German would not do
To express the depth of my love for you
Shakespeare's lines are too clichéd,
Keats, Donne, and Burns's old and frayed
I've always thought it so untrue
When someone said that "violets are blue,"
And some heavenly power strike me dead
If I ever start with "roses are red"!
I wish I had the perfect way
To say what's on my heart
To tell you just how much it aches
Whenever we're apart
But stolen words cannot repay
A love so full and true
